Addiction to opiate painkillers is a burgeoning
problem in this country. It affects young and old,
men and women, and is becoming a concern of baby
boomers. Dependence slips into abuse, and abuse
leads to disruption of lives through social friction
and legal entanglements. Sometimes an overdose will
take a life.
There is a wonderful treatment for opiate addiction,
called Suboxone, that professionals and patients say
is a “lifesaver”.

Opioid Addiction Treatment
“You must get help from
addiction to opiate drugs”, the spouse or other
loved one will say. Opiate addiction is an equal
opportunity disease, affecting people from all walks
of life. Men and women, professionals, students,
young and old, all kinds of people have all faced
this situation. Individuals will take action when
they realize that their lives have become too
complicated obtaining these drugs, which is often
associated with severe social and legal
consequences.
The drugs have
well-known names: Oxycontin, Percocet,Vicodin,
Lortab, and Hydrocodone--all opiates. Individuals
initially may have been prescribed pain medication
following a dental procedure, after a motor vehicle
accident, for back pain or other condition.
Psychological factors come into play, which cause
them to become reliant on painkillers, long after
the initial bodily insult for which it was
prescribed.
Lifeline Rehabilitation
offers an advanced form of treatment for opioid
addiction. The physicians at Lifeline are certified
to prescribe Suboxone medication, which allows the
patient to withdraw from his opiate painkillers
without side-effects commonly associated with this
process. There is no “high” either. Ultimately, many
patients will be able to discontinue Suboxone
therapy and resume a more fulfilling life in as few
as six weeks. For others it may take longer.
Suboxone has been a “lifesaver” for many people.
-
Intake
You will meet with Stephen Silverman, M.D.,
medical director of Lifeline Rehabilitation,
certified by the American Society of Addiction
Medicine to prescribe Suboxone medication. At
that time, you will be given a comprehensive
medical exam. Treatment with Suboxone will be
discussed. Goals and expectations will be
considered.
-
Induction
Arrive at Lifeline Rehabilitation to begin
Suboxone treatment by placing the medication
under your tongue. You need to be in a state of
mild to moderate opioid withdrawal to begin the
process. You will receive the first dose in the
doctor’s office and will be asked to stay for
awhile to monitor its effects. You may receive
additional medication, if necessary.
Appointments may be made so that your dosage can
be adjusted.
-
Stabilization
You may need to come in approximately once per
week for a few weeks to “fine tune” your dose.
-
Maintenance
Treatment compliance and progress will be
monitored on a weekly, then monthly, schedule if
goals are met. Frequently, participation in some
form of social or psychological counseling will
be arranged to complement the process.
Maintenance may last from weeks to years,
depending on the individual.
-
Discharge
Discontinuance of Suboxone treatment is a
desired goal for many. Psychological and social
counseling will be continued, as necessary.
